Meeting Kun Khmer in Battambang: culture, practice and respect
A gym encounter can reveal how people learn a martial art. Start by respecting the coach's plan and the participants' own reasons for being there.
UpdatedClub presence is supported by its own pages. Registration progress was supplied by Robert Grégoire on 3 October 2026; final registration is not confirmed. Visit etiquette is editorial guidance.

Say whether you want to observe, ask questions or take part in an introductory session. Those requests require different arrangements. A gym is a training place, not a performance that starts whenever a visitor arrives. Let the coach decide whether the proposed date and format fit the group, and wait for confirmation before arranging other plans around the visit.
Watch how learning happens
Look at a short technical sequence, the feedback a coach gives and what changes when it is repeated. A return to guard, a shift in distance or a partner's timing can be more revealing than the hardest strike. Ask for an explanation during a suitable pause. Do not interrupt a drill or request a more spectacular demonstration for the camera.
Use comparisons with care
Visitors familiar with Muay Thai, kickboxing or K-1 may notice movements they recognise. Use that as the beginning of a question, rather than proof that the practices are identical. Ask which rules or teaching goals apply to the session you are seeing. This guide makes no claim that one short visit settles historical origins or represents every Cambodian club.
Respect consent and personal space
Ask the coach where to stand and keep clear of working pairs and equipment. Obtain agreement before making portraits or filming a session, especially when children are present; follow the club's safeguarding process. Permission to observe does not imply permission to publish names or personal stories. If someone declines a photograph, put the camera away and continue the encounter normally.
Understand the KKB connection
KKB publishes a Battambang club profile and a visit-request page. CamboArts is connected to the same publisher, Robert Grégoire, so this is a disclosed related-project link. Robert says the club's documents have reached the federation after provincial validation, with final registration still pending as of 3 October 2026. That status is a publisher statement, not a certificate we have independently inspected.
Confirm the practical agreement
Ask about the format, language, equipment, participation requirements and any contribution before accepting a visit. If you want to support the club separately, distinguish a donation from a paid service and request a clear explanation of its purpose. CamboArts may develop commission-based local introductions, but no unnamed agency or bundled cultural package is sold here. The first step is a visit request answered by the club.
